For veterinary clinics
Is your veterinary clinic found in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek or Mistral?
13 September 2026 – we asked an assistant
“vet in Austin, TX”
Google lists 47,793 veterinarians in the United States – 18.8% of the 254,718 it lists worldwide (measured 10 September 2026, primary category only). In Google's own categories the same business may also be filed as an animal hospital, a veterinary care provider or an emergency veterinarian service – an assistant asked about any of those names is answering about you.
Owners in this trade search “marketing for veterinarians” about 320 times a month in the United States. The pages that answer that search were written to rank on Google, and an AI answer now often sits above those rankings.
Across those readings the assistant drew on 14 veterinary clinics in all, and exactly one of them came back every single time.
Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek and Mistral where to go for a vet. Do you do enough to get chosen?
What we see for veterinary clinics
AI already answers this question every day. From a list of six or seven names.
These are the kinds of questions we measure for veterinary clinics:
When someone puts a local question like these to an assistant, it usually answers with a short business list. Across the categories we have measured, that list is drawn from a pool of six or seven businesses – four or five of them shown at a time. Ask again and the pool holds while the line-up moves: of 313 names we saw across 50 questions, 121 came back in every reading and 192 did not. In 46 of those 50 questions at least one name never dropped out. The free scan shows whether you were named on the day we asked; monitoring shows whether you hold. And it is your city, not your industry. We asked the same question in 3 metros across 10 trades: of 19 comparable pairs of cities, not one shared a single business. The short list you are competing for is rebuilt for every city. The list is not guaranteed to appear at all: in our first wave of readings the assistant rendered one in 45 of 63, and in the other 18 it named businesses in prose instead. Every figure above describes the list. The list is not the whole answer. Across all 223 of our Austin readings, 150 showed a business list, and in 69 of those the text beneath it named businesses the list did not carry; 73 showed no list at all, and in 68 of those the text still named some. We read both.
We measured veterinary clinics in Austin, TX directly: one local question, asked 4 times. Across those readings the assistant drew on 14 veterinary clinics in all, and exactly one of them came back every single time. One clinic came first in 2 of the 4 readings. In a sample of 22 veterinary clinics pulled from Google Maps, 18 run their own live site, 2 have no website at all and the other 2 list only a booking page, a social profile or a marketplace listing, or could not be checked. We also recorded what the assistant read to build its answers about veterinary clinics: of 16 citations, not one pointed at a business's own website. They went to other people's pages, most often greatpetcare.com, reddit.com and pawsrx.io. For veterinary clinics the assistant reaches businesses through pages that are not theirs, so where you stand in those matters more here than anything on your own site. The list is not the whole answer. Across all 8 of our Austin readings in this trade, on every model tier, in 1 of the 6 readings that showed a list the text beneath it named veterinary clinics the list did not carry.
Parker Animal Care – South Lamar; strong local reputation and a frequently recommended option.

The pages behind the answers for veterinary clinics
Where the assistant went to build its answers about veterinary clinics in our readings, most-cited first, and what a business can do about each. Businesses’ own sites are not in this list. Counted by page: one reading that cited three pages of the same site counts once for each page, so these counts can add up to more than the citations counted by site above.

What decides it
Which clinic gets named? Three things decide.
We measure how AI builds its “best near me” answers. The pattern holds – and it is not your Maps ranking.
The Google card
Assistants pull their local candidates from the same data Google Maps runs on. Your Business Profile gets you considered – or leaves you invisible before anything else matters.
The review filter
In the categories we’ve measured, the businesses AI names carry review counts several times their category’s median. Reviews decide who survives the cut.
Your own website
Most of what AI actually says – prices, who does dental cleanings best, what to expect – it quotes from somewhere. For veterinary clinics, in our readings it was never the businesses' own sites. Having a site is not what is missing: across all the trades we measured, of the 34 businesses ChatGPT named that we could match to our Maps sample, 34 run a live site of their own. Here the answer is decided elsewhere.
Maps position doesn’t explain it. In our measurements, businesses ranked past #60 in Maps got named while some top-ranked ones were skipped. The report shows which of the three looks weakest for you – with the evidence attached.
FAQ
Before you start.
Can’t I just ask ChatGPT myself?
You can, and you’ll learn something. But one answer on one day from one service isn’t a measurement. We check several services, repeat the questions people actually ask, and keep the raw answers so the conclusion can be checked.
Does this replace our SEO or our marketing agency?
No. It measures something most agencies don’t report on yet: which businesses AI assistants name. The output is evidence you can hand to whoever already does your marketing.
What do you need from us?
Your website, your city, and an email address. Nothing confidential, nothing about your customers.
Corporate groups are buying every clinic in town – do independents stand a chance in AI answers?
In our Austin readings the assistant built its answers from directory pages and Reddit, not from clinic websites. The scan shows which clinics it names in your area, independent or not, and what those pages say about you. 'Independent vet who doesn't rush' is literally a question people ask.
Is the monitoring subscription required?
No – the scan, the report and the fix work are one-time purchases and stand on their own. But one reading is a snapshot of something that moves: most of the names we have measured did not come back unchanged on a re-read. Monitoring is what turns a single reading into a position you can watch. Any report purchase includes the first month free.
What if the scan shows we’re doing fine?
Then you’ve spent nothing and you know it. The free scan exists to tell you whether the paid one is worth it – sometimes the answer is no.
